The tahara is performed with the utmost respect and dignity for deceased. Care is taken to save all blood for burial, since it is considered part of the body, which must be completely buried. The deceased is meticulously washed from head to toe, then the body is immersed in water for the final purification while the Chevra participants proclaim “he/she is pure!”. The body is dried and dressed in a pure white shroud, sprinkled with a little earth from Israel, and placed in an all wood casket. Prayers are said before, during, and after the tahara on behalf of the soul of the deceased. Men do the tahara for a man, and woman do the tahara for a woman.
