Today the primary tasks of the Chevra Kadisha are doing the ritual washing of the body, called “tahara”, and providing a watcher/guard for the deceased, who is called the “shomer”. According to Jewish custom, the deceased should not be left alone. The shomer recites psalms, which are believed to be comforting to the soul of the deceased.
